People You Know

Name: Sarah Starmer

Age: I’ve hit the midcentury mark.

Hometown: I was born and raised in Beloit. My family and I now live in Roscoe.

Occupation/civic memberships: I’ve been media coordinator/community relations for Beloit Memorial Hospital for 17 years. I write several newsletters, plan marketing and am Golf Pro-Am Coordinator for the hospital. Recently, I helped plan the grand opening event for NorthPointe Terrace, which was a lot of fun. My job allows me to get involved with many of the hospital’s fund-raising events and meet lots of great people. Currently, I teach Sunday School at the First Congregational Church in Beloit, am on the Religious Education Board, and am a host parent for an international student at Beloit College. Over the years, I think I’ve been involved in almost every activity our kids participated in. They’re in college now.

Family: My husband Ron and I have been married for 27 years. We have two children: Ryan, who is 24 and Kaylin, who is 20.

Favorite food: That’s a toughie. I’d say pizza is my weakness, especially with lots of veggies.

Favorite music: Music that makes memories: Elton John, Paul McCartney and Rod Stewart.

Favorite movies: The all-time greatest movie ever, “The Sound of Music.” Also, we just saw “Dream Girls” and loved the music in it.

Favorite books: Whatever I'm reading at the time. Right now, I’m reading “Last Girls” by Lee Smith. One of my all-time favorites was “In the Heart of the Sea,” a nonfiction book set in the early 1800s about a whaling ship.

Favorite vacation spots: Oceans are nice, but I like lakes. Wallon Lake in Michigan is as blue as the Caribbean. We like Whitewater Lake for boating and kayaking.

In my spare time: I like to be outdoors; walking, gardening, boating. I’m a golfer from way back, so I try to play when time allows.

I think the most important issue in the Stateline area is: Inspiring people to take pride in their homes, their work and their families.

If I could change one thing in the world: I wish every child could have an adult who loved and cared for them.

If I could sit down to supper with anybody, living or dead: I think I’d just as soon sit down with my family and friends. They’re my biggest inspiration.

Most people don’t know: I believe “a cookie a day keeps the doctor away.”

I can’t stand: I’m a little bit of a tree-hugger. I don’t like litterbugs or people who waste resources.

I wish I knew how to: Balance a checkbook, play a guitar and juggle.

Motto, inspiration or favorite quote: “Time flies, but remember you’re the navigator.” We have to enjoy each day and make the most of it. It’s the journey, not the destination.
